Inkjet printers and laser printers use different technology, and therefore need different types of cartridges in order to function. Inkjet printers require ink cartridges, as they spray droplets of ink onto the paper. Colour inkjet printers will require one black ink cartridge as well as one colour ink cartridge for each of the primary pigments (cyan, magenta and yellow).

On the other hand, a laser printer uses toner cartridges containing a dry toner powder that is transferred to the paper using heat and pressure by a drum unit.
